Questions
Questions we hear first
If your question is not here, call and ask.
Do I have to pay?
Fees follow a sliding scale based on household size and income. Some families pay nothing. You will see the fee in writing before you decide. Government filing fees are separate and are paid to the agency.
Will you report me to immigration?
No. What you tell a lawyer is confidential, and the clinic does not report clients to immigration authorities. We ask about your history because we need it to protect you.
Do you speak Spanish?
Nerea Soltero and Elio Brenneman meet clients in Spanish, and our front desk does too. For other languages we arrange an interpreter.
I received a letter from immigration. What do I do?
Do not ignore it. Write down the date on it, make a copy and call us the same day. Some letters have deadlines of days, not weeks.
A family member has been detained. Can you help?
Call right away with the person's full name, date of birth and, if you have it, their A-number. We can often ask for a bond hearing, though we cannot promise the result.
How long will my case take?
It depends on the agency, the category and where you live. Some cases take months and some take years. We tell you what we know about your line, and we tell you when we do not know.
Can you promise I will win?
No, and no honest lawyer can. We can tell you what the law allows, what the risks are and what we will do.
Can I come in without an appointment?
Mostly by appointment, so that someone has time for you. On Wednesday evenings a lawyer sees drop-ins until 7 p.m.; call to check this week's schedule.
Which cases do you not take?
Criminal charges, injury claims and divorces. We refer those to other offices.
